You Shall Know Our Velocity by Dave Eggers Essay Every person undergoes difficulty in life. Experiences in life may cause troubles in our way of thinking and sometimes even affects our principles. In the novel, â€Å"You Shall Know Our Velocity† by Dave Eggers, the character of Will Chmlielewski experienced difficulty in the form of losing his friend (Jack) and being beaten. He intended to help Jack with the large amount of money that he got but no avail. It was hard not to be able to do something to avoid the death of a friend especially when you are very much willing to do anything in your power to shun it. Nobody couldn’t blame Will for feeling lost and hurt. Because of his hurt and disappointment, he felt that the money in his hands was a burden that he had to get rid of it as quick as he possible. Will together with his other friend Hand went to different countries to give away the money supposedly intended to save their friend Jack. They thought that when they give away the money to people who need it, they will somehow help in restoring hope to people’s perception. The two realized along the way that it is not easy to give away just like that. People have to earn their blessings or the help that they receive. Both the giver and the receiver should exert effort in achieving humanity. If people like Will and Hand will just give away money without any particular reason or purpose, there is a very huge possibility that others may take advantage of them or worse, even rob them. In real life, it feels good to be able to help without anything in return. However, even with the purest intentions, one should always be on the look out against abusive people. The effort of generosity and humanity might be put to waste if people who need it don’t receive it because of the people who take advantage of it. There is no doubt that everybody needs help in one way or another. Not all help are material in nature; some need emotional help. So what should be done to make sure that the one that you’re helping deserves your care? The simple answer is – let him earn it. Earning it has different ways. May it be proving that he is trustworthy or showing his sincerity. The novel is a fiction. Nevertheless, the gestures of Will and Hand in the novel would bring relief to a lot of people if they were true. Some may find their deeds crazy, but it’s touching. They didn’t contain themselves in rendering help only in their town. They rather took time to travel around the world to spread it. The amount of money that they were giving away isn’t an issue. What’s important is the message that they trying to convey by their actions. No matter how desperate and hopeless you are, your unpleasant experiences shouldn’t be a hindrance in the distribution of happiness, hope and love. One’s own frustrations, desperations and sorrows may become a tool in getting over the same things. It’s just a matter of seeing the light side of it. When you know that it is difficult to be unhappy, share happiness. Eventually, you yourself will feel grace. People have different ways in comforting themselves and getting out of a difficult situation. Some people act crazy, some stay inside their rooms and mourns until they dry their tears from crying and some focus their attention to something that will keep them busy. Will and Hand chose to be crazy but humane. Their means may look crazy but their intention is good. They give relief to people’s misery and needs which in turn give them satisfaction and medium to get rid of their sorrow. The meaning of the novel is very deep. The characters and gestures of Will and Hand may seem comical satires but a close look at their temperaments shows good heart. Their adventures different cultures and how they managed to get along with them even with their ignorance. Ultimately, the author wants to show that even in a modern time like ours, humanity is still alive.

False identities, lies and deceit, Lucentio from The Taming Of The Shrew and Tom from The Talented Mr. Ripley did all of these things. They both lied about what they like or what they did. They both took false identities to get the girl that they wanted to like them. Though they have many similarities comedies and dramas end very differently. The Talented Mr. Ripley is a drama and ends in tragedy, The Taming Of The Shrew is a comedy and ends with happiness.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Lucentio and Tom both lied to get what they wanted from people who were supposed to be able to trust them. Lucentio lied about where he was from and that he was a schoolmaster there to teach Bianca. Tom lied about going to Princeton with Dickey Greenleaf, liking jazz, liking sailing and art. Tom’s lie wasn’t as bad as lucentio’s but he still wasn’t being honest about who he rally was. Lucentio’s more serious and harder to get out of. â€Å"Luc/Cam. I read that I profess, the art of love.†(IV, ii, 11).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Both of the characters took false identities to get the girl that they liked. Lucentio said he was a schoolmaster named Cambio to be able to get close and get to know Bianca so she would fall in love with him. Lucentio worked with his friend Tranio getting more people involved in his lies and false identities. â€Å"Tra. You will be a schoolmaster / and undertake the teaching of the maid/† (I, I, 197 – 205). Tom told the girl he liked that his name was Dickey Greenleaf the son of a rich boat owner so the girl would think that he was rich and famous. This time Tom’s false identity was more serious because his ended in tragedy and deceit, Lucentio’s ended with him getting Bianca. A comedy ends differently than a drama in that a comedy everything is normal at the end order in the world is restored, but at the end of a drama tragedy occurs usually in murder but also with betrayal. The Talented Mr. Ripley ends with Tom’s lies being exposed, people getting killed and people being betrayed by Tom. In The Taming Of The Shrew the characters all get the girl or change the girl for the better but everything that happens is for the better.

Descriptive Writing

Though not very big, my home is a place where my heart is. My home is the most comfortable, warm and cozy place where I live with my family and spend most of the time in. Entering the east facing wood paneled front door of my home, I am welcomed by my pseudo German Shepherd. An off-white shoe cabinet in the foyer is neatly arranged with everyone’s shoes. In the foyer there is a gilded mirror which is placed above a half moon console table which is decorated with a bowl of colorful blooms and little round. Interior decoration being our forte, we still are thrilled to step into the living room and see our artistic touch. The tray ceiling designed with lights faces down on our Lorenzo leather armchair and divan sofa which we have saved hard to buy. Square shaped cushions quilted with floral designs are well arranged on the divan sofa. The polished wooden floor tiles, feels so cool under my feet. In front of the sofa, lays a Persian rug, a gift from my much travelled aunt on which the unique Kenshoma style coffee table lends a contemporary look. A collage of all my artwork from kindergarten to standard 6 takes pride of place above the flat screen Samsung TV. Across on the opposite wall is the window overlooking the park. As we enter the doorway on the west wall, we pass into a well lit hallway leading to the bedrooms one on the right and the other on the left, each with its own en suite. My sanctum sanctorum is on the left, with a pad of my very own in pastel colors of Nippon-Lemon Drop and Golden Buff. Against the south wall by the window is my four poster mahogany bed with Laura Ashley sheets and quilt. The parted Laura Ashley curtains open onto a balcony which is opposite my bed. From the balcony, I can see and hear the rippling sea rolling away to the horizon. On the far wall of my room is the bathroom on the left and almost a bare walk-in wardrobe on the right. My few but elegant clothes from Nicole MNJ, Soda and Padini hang in the closet. My two pairs of Jimmy Choo shoes sits forlorn at the bottom shelf. My Prada handbag, not original of course sits proudly on display by the floral upholstered chair next to the period-style dressing table and mirror. Incidentally my walk-in wardrobe has a connecting door to the bathroom. Now let me take you through my bathroom, my second best place of refuge, away from the heat. It is a small marvel of glass marble and modern fitting like rain shower. My toothbrush and toilet paper holders are from IKEA. My Johnson Suisse square vanity is above the off-white marble counter. Above the vanity, I have a dark wooden framed mirror which was given by my grandfather. On the counter, I have placed three scented candles on ornate candle stands of wrought iron which I bought from SSF, the home deco store. My room constantly smells of fresh lavender. It has soothing and calming effects on me, especially on days when I have tough assignments. Light floods this small cubicle from a frosted glass window and two white down lights from the ceiling. To me, my home is the most relaxing place to stay. Almost all of my tensions become extinct just when I place my first foot in my home. My home is a place where if I had a chance, I would not want to leave for awhile. Finally I would like to quote John Howard Payne’s 19th century song â€Å"Mid palaces and pleasures though we may roam.
