Bigg Abstract (Add Abstract here) GMOs Causing More Harm than Good A statement was issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the early 1990’s that advised consumers that there had been no danger associated with consuming foods containing Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) therefore no â€Å"safety† studies were necessary. The FDA furthermore made the ruling that the labeling of GMO foods was not mandatory in the year 2000. In 1992 a lawsuit against the BIOTECH community released 44,000 secret internal memos into the public domain showing that not only where GMOs dangerous, they were less nutritious than non-GMO food, they had been linked to†¦show more content†¦How did Genetically Modified Organisms Become Available in our Food Supply Monsanto, â€Å"Meeting the needs of today, while preserving the planet for tomorrow.† So how did something so controversial become readily available in our food supply when the overwhelming consensus of the scientific staff in the FDA claimed that they not only were different, but dangerous and advised against it? Former attorney to Monsanto and later Monsanto’s Vice President, Michael Taylor, was the person in charge of the FDAs policy in 1995 and is now back as the U.S. Food Safety Czar at the FDA. The result was a policy that imposed no burdens and zero regulations while creating the illusion that Genetically Engineered Foods were being regulated. The FDA does not â€Å"approve† of genetically modified crops however will allow companies like Monsanto through a voluntary consultation process produce whatever science it wants. If the FDA asks the company for more information and in most cases are ignored, a formal letter is sent out reminding the companies that it is their responsibility to make sure the foods they are producing are safe. Monsanto, the same chemical company that had told the public that PCBs, Agent Orange and DDTs had been safe. Why Should You Avoid Genetically Modified Foods?
